TOP 10 things to do at the Indiana State Fair

The Year of the Bicentennial! It’s time to celebrate Indiana’s 200th birthday and commemorate our state’s history. So what is the best way to do that? Check out the top 10 things to do this year at the 2016 Indiana State Fair! You are guaranteed to have a great time.

10. Choo Choo

Hop aboard the Indiana Bicentennial Train located in the Family Fun Park! The Indiana Historical Society and the Indiana State Fair Commission bring you this exhibit to commemorate the Indiana Bicentennial funded by the Indiana Railroad Company and Norfolk Southern Corporation. This activity features three air-conditioned box cars exhibiting Indiana’s past, present, and future through a lens of four themes: transportation, land use, talent and community. Also when fairgoers visit, they can meet a historical train character and enjoy an activity tent where they can reflect their own Hoosier memories.

9. Jam Out

There will be a free concert each night of the fair! All you need to purchase is your ticket into the fairgrounds. 17 free stage stars will perform on the free stage, which is general admission and has no reserved seats. Popular stars like Neal McCoy, Granger Smith, Maddie & Tae, Lauren Alaina, and Laura Marano will sing on the free stage. Jam out and sing along! Find the entire schedule of entertainers and dates here.

8. Yolks on You

As many might remember, the Indiana State Fair was without poultry last year due to the two highly pathogenic avian influenza, or HPAI, strains circulating throughout 2015. The Indiana Board of Animal Health banned the showing of poultry at all county fairs and the Indiana State Fair. Well, have no fear, the chickens are back!  Be sure to check out the Poultry and Rabbit Barn and watch the show!

7. Be a Champ

Grab a bag of kettle corn and a lemon shake up, and snag a seat in the Farmer’s Coliseum to watch the 4-H Market Animal Grand Champion Drive, featuring market lambs, meat goats, barrows, dairy steers, and beef steers. See the best of the best animals in all of Indiana compete for the top five titles: Grand Champion, Reserve Grand Champion, 3rd Overall, 4th Overall, and 5th Overall. These ambitious 4-Hers have put in hours working tirelessly with their animals! Come see their hard work pay off on Sunday, August 7, 2016 at 7 pm.

6. Chat it Up

Come to the Glass Barn and talk to farmers LIVE at 11 am, 2 pm, and 4 pm every day! Prizes will be given away at each and every chat! Throughout the Indiana State Fair, visitors of the Glass Barn will have an opportunity to video chat with Indiana farmers on their farms and ask them questions about their production practices. In addition to talking with farmers, the Glass Barn visitors can enjoy a free photo booth, learn about modern farms through an interactive computer game, play BeanGo to get a free hat, and follow the journey a soybean takes from field to table.

5. Be Cheesy

Feelin’ cheesy? Come on into the air conditioning in the Purdue Extension Ag/Hort Building at the Indiana State Fair. Take a look at the American Dairy Association cheese sculpture. Each year, there is a different cheese sculpture created where Indiana Dairy Farmers unveil their artistic contribution to the State Fair. The cheese used to make the structure is made from milk from cattle grown on Indiana Dairy Farms. Now that’s cool! Cheese-o-Pete, you have to go!

4. Go Hog Wild

Who doesn’t love pigs?! Be sure to visit the Swine Barn to see the world’s largest and the 2nd world’s largest boars! They’re huge! Also, check out the Grand and Reserve Grand Champion Sows and their litters of piglets. Babies and fat pigs: gotta love ‘em!

3. Meet a Farmer

Farmers have been around forever, right?! At least most farm families have been in Indiana farming for a LONG time! In celebration of the Year of the Bicentennial, IFOF challenges you to find a farmer around the Indiana State Fairgrounds and take a picture with them using the official hashtag #FarmerSelfie. You can take a picture with a poster of a farmer, a sign with a farmer on it, or even with 1 of 17 featured farmers. Then, post your picture on all of your social media handles! For every #FarmerSelfie posted, IFOF will make a donation to Feeding Indiana’s Hungry! At the end of each day of the fair, Indiana Family of Farmers will be a drawing for a winner that will get a $50 gift card to Kroger! So, be sure to find a farmer take a #FarmerSelfie and post it online! Having fun and feeding the hungry! What could be better than that?

2. Happy Birthday Indiana

In celebration of the Year of the Bicentennial at the Indiana State Fair, the Indiana Arts Building features several exhibits showing Indiana’s rich history and culture. Visit this building that features art, photography, crafts and displays with Bicentennial themes of 200 years. Celebrate Indiana’s 200th birthday! Also, the building features 16 watercolor prints by 1st lady Karen Pence; a few include the Cardinal, Indiana State House and a typical Indiana front porch.

1. Have a MOOvelous Time

Visit the Dairy Bar right across from the Plaza, a beautiful addition to the Indiana Farmers Coliseum, for a Peanut Butter milkshake and a Smokin’ Hot Grilled Cheese made with Sriracha and smoked cheddar cheese, both new in 2016 at the Dairy Bar. Also enjoy a chocolate, vanilla, or strawberry shake or hand-dipped, fresh ice cream. Everyone loves ice cream to cool them down on a hot day at the Indiana State Fair. Mozzarella sticks are another fan favorite! Mmm Mmm good!

By Lauren Taylor of Indiana Soybean Alliance

The Year of the Farmer! It’s time to celebrate the hard work of the people behind Indiana agriculture. So what is the best way to do that? Check out the top 10 things to do this year at the 2015 Indiana State Fair! You are guaranteed to have a great time.

10. Be Amaized

Come to the Harvest Pavilion and check out Amazing Maize! Amazing Maize takes visitors on a journey through the centuries, beginning with corn's unlikely origins in a small-eared bushy plant called teosinte. Visitors trace the global spread of the crop following Christopher Columbus' travels, including its social impact in Africa and Europe. Fairgoers return to the shores of America to explore the push to improve productivity and the rise of hybrid corn. The final stop on the journey highlights the modern technology used to improve and grow the crop.

9. Get Local

ISDA will host the brand-new Indiana Grown booth located within the Harvest Pavilion at this year’s State Fair.  The booth will provide State Fair visitors the opportunity to learn more about the program, as well as where they can buy locally-based Indiana Grown products.

8. Oh Baby

See a baby calf born almost every day at the Indiana State Fair! That’s right every day! Now on its 16th year, the Livestock Nursery is an award winning interactive, educational venue that attracts all ages!

7. Pig Out

The Indiana Pork Producers got a makeover! When you come to the State Fair this year, make sure to stop by and get your pork burger at the new and improved pork tents! They have a new look and a new flavor that won’t disappoint, but the same great hospitality.

6. Go Live

Come to the Glass Barn and talk to farmers LIVE at 11, 2, 4 every day! Prizes will be given away at each and every chat! Throughout the Indiana State Fair, visitors of the Glass Barn will have an opportunity to Skype with Indiana farmers on their farms and ask them questions about their production practices. In addition to talking with farmers, the Glass Barn visitors can enjoy a free photo booth, learn about modern farms through an interactive computer game, and follow the journey a soybean takes from field to table.

5. Dress Up

Superman the llama? Yep you heard right! You can see that at the Indiana State Fair! Check out the llama costume contest where you can see llamas like you have never seen them before!

4. Fly High

Get in line for the Ferris wheel and go all the way to the top to overlook the beautiful Indiana State Fairgrounds! If it wasn’t for soy biodiesel then you may get stuck up there. The entire Midway at the State Fair is powered by soy biodiesel. That means that Indiana farmers don’t just feed Hoosiers they also fuel your fun!

3. Be Cool

When the hot, humid weather sets in for the Indiana State Fair, visit the northeast side of the fairgrounds and walk through Pathway to Water Quality (PWQ). The park-like setting is an exhibit showcasing the importance of water quality and soil health. Conservation practices are on display that can be utilized on the farm, at home, and all areas in between. There is plenty of shade to cool you off, and activities for children and adults alike. Pathway also highlights beautiful native plants and flowers, and wildlife such as hawks, ducks and birds. As you leave, grab a cup of cool, free water. PWQ is sponsored by the Indiana Conservation Partnership.

2. Need S'more

Visit the Dairy Bar right across from the Plaza, the new beautiful addition to the Indiana Farmers Coliseum, for a milkshake and a famous grilled cheese at the Dairy Bar. In addition to all the classic favorites, this year’s featured shake is the toasted-marshmallow-flavored S’mores Shake and the featured grilled cheese is Muenster cheese on cinnamon raisin bread. YUM!

Pop In for a Dairy Delicious Meal

Cheese sculptures, great food, parades, and cooking demonstrations are adding up to a great fair for Indiana dairy farmers!

The Cheese Lady finishes her 2012 sculpture

Sarah Kaufmann’s  artistic cheese creations have become an integral part of the Indiana State Fair. She’s back again this year, and her huge cheese creation will highlight the importance of childhood nutrition and starting your day with an energizing breakfast, as well as dairy farmers’ commitment to kids’ wellness and nutrition. You can watch her work in the DuPont Food Pavilion and see the finished product after the official unveiling.

While you’re in the DuPont Food Pavilion, check out the food demonstrations on the Red Gold Culinary Stage! Dairy experts are sharing their knowledge on the stage at 2:00 each day. Join them to learn new recipes that incorporated nutritious dairy products!

The Daily Parade adds even more fun to the state fair’s daily activities. Each day at 6:00 the parade will circle the main road at the state fair. Look for the dairy float in the line-up!

A day at the fair can leave you hungry, and the Dairy Bar is a longstanding favorite for food at the fair. If you’re looking for a light, healthy snack, try their apple slices or cottage cheese! At the fair early? They serve breakfast until 10:00 each morning. They’re premiering the Blue Moo this year. It’s a grilled American and bleu cheese sandwich on sourdough bread.

And don’t worry- they’re still serving all your favorite fair-time dairy delights: scrumptious grilled cheese sandwiches, creamy milkshakes, monster ice cream cones, regular and flavored milk, breakfast sandwiches and more.

Beef Up Your Time at the Indiana State Fair

By Sarah Correll

Indiana beef cattle farmers have always had a role in the Indiana State Fair, and this year is no exception! They will be offering their delicious food, and a side of knowledge, at the 2013 fair.

The Indiana Beef Tents are located on both the north and south side of the fairgrounds. Both will be serving all-beef hotdogs (the kids meals come with coloring books, too!), hamburgers, and the famous ribeye sandwiches. Added bonus: the ribeyes are under 290 calories!

At 1:00 each day a beef expert will be teaching us how to make the most of the delicious product in the DuPont Food Pavilion. You can also learn about beef in the Exposition Hall at their booth each day.

We also can’t forget about all the beef producers who will be on the grounds for the fair.

Watch beef farmers from ages eight to eighty and beyond show their cattle in the various show and have your questions answered!

Feed the Hungry and Your Family!

Indiana’s Family of Farmers Recipe Trail offers daily giveaways and a chance to give back

INDIANAPOLIS (July 25, 2013) — Indiana’s Family of Farmers (IFoF) will again offer a fun challenge for Indiana State Fair attendees this year, while also giving them a chance to help feed the hungry.

For each fairgoer who finishes the IFoF Recipe Trail, one pound of food is donated to food banks across the state through a partnership between IFoF and Feeding Indiana’s Hungry. Recipe trail travelers helped donate more than 3,000 pounds of food last year. This year’s goal is 3,500 pounds, or 3,500 recipe trail travelers.

“One in six Hoosiers is at risk of hunger, and for children the numbers are just one in every four that does not know from where their next meal will come,” said Emily Weikert Bryant, executive director of Feeding Indiana’s Hungry. “Our member food banks distribute millions of pounds of food across the state, and we are truly grateful for the help of Indiana’s farmers who not just grow and raise the food we eat, but are generous in sharing their harvests with our food banks and our neighbors in need.”

Participants collect recipe cards from the 10 locations around the fairgrounds and bring them to the IFoF booth at the DuPont Food Pavilion where they will receive a prize for participating and get counted as a donor of a pound of food. The booth also features a chance to register for a daily popcorn giveaway and the grand prize of a chest freezer.

Following are the 10 recipe card locations:
  • Exposition Hall (Rose Acre Farms, booths 526 & 527 on the southwest side of the building)
  • Ball State Ag/Hort Building (World’s Largest Popcorn Ball)
  • DuPont Food Pavilion (3 stops: Indiana Wines/Purdue Wine Grape Team, Indiana Dairy, Purdue)
  • Habitat for Humanity Ag House
  • Indiana Farm Bureau Building
  • Glass Barn
  • Normandy Barn
  • Pathway to Water Quality
Final stop/recipe redemption point: IFoF booth at DuPont food pavilion

The IFoF recipe cards feature recipes from real farmers around Indiana and highlight Indiana’s commodities such as pork, beef, poultry, soybeans, corn and dairy along with an Indiana wine pairing. On the reverse side, fairgoers will meet the farmer and read a personal story from his or her family.

IFoF is proud to be part of the Dupont Food Pavilion all 17 days of the Indiana State Fair. Along with the recipe trail, different agricultural groups will be featured and provide food samples at the IFoF booth.

IFoF is also partnering with Habitat for Humanity. The Habitat home build on the state fairgrounds will be a stop on this year’s trail. As part of our partnership, Indiana’s Family of Farmers will donate a freezer and food donations to fill the freezer to the new homeowner.

The World’s Largest Popcorn Ball, a 5,000-pound, 9-foot popcorn delicacy sponsored by IFoF and featured at the Ball State Ag/Horticulture Building, will be unveiled on Aug. 3 at 10 a.m.  This will also be a stop on the 2013 IFoF recipe trail. After the fair, the popcorn will be fed to Indiana livestock.
